In a world increasingly dependent upon and distracted by technology, Close to Home is a return to simplicity, to human connection, and to what technology cannot achieve - physical works made by hand and by heart.
Daily repetitive moments of my life in rural Newfoundland - checking the mail, walking familiar paths, watching my cat sleep in the sun - become sacred by what they signify. The mundane is made special by virtue of its inherent value, by celebrating it, by noticing it, by never taking it for granted.
I employ a loose, expressive oil painting style to develop a tactile intimacy that is unmistakably human. I deliberately use a bold colour palette to suggest images conjured through memory and experience rather than to create literal depictions based in realism. These paintings create a
moment for the viewer to slow down, to remember a loved one, to feel a sense of catharsis, and to find connection within a handmade art object.
